Periodontal Infections and Atherosclerosis: Mechanisms of Association

نویسنده

چکیده

The bacteria associated with periodontal infection as well the by-products of host-bacterial interactions can have potential systemic effects. The field of periodontal medicine has emerged on the basis of the above and explores the interaction between periodontitis and various systemic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes and pregnancy-related complications. Atherosclerosis constitutes the most important risk factor for serious cardiovascular incidents like myocardial infarction. The links between periodontitis and CVD might be explained by the possible contribution of periodontitis to the formation of atherosclerotic lesions. This review focuses on the mechanism of association between periodontal diseases (PD) and atherosclerosis.

Periodontitis as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

There is now a convincing body of evidence that mechanism of atherosclerosis has a major inflammatory component and it is much more than the simple accumulation of lipids on the vascular walls. Studies have shown that certain other mild bacterial infections consist a major risk factor for stroke in young and middle aged patients. Several possible mechanisms could explain the observed associatio...

The Bi-Directional Relationship between Periodontal Disease and Hyperlipidemia

It has been proposed for several decades that infections may be responsible for the accelerated development of atherosclerosis. The initiation of the atherosclerotic plaque is ascribed to focal accumulation of lipids. This explains the importance of plasma lipids in the development of atherosclerosis. Recent reports point towards a possible association between periodontal disease and increased ...

Traditional Studies of Periodontal Disease and Cardiovascular Disease

Background. Oral infection models have emerged as useful tools to study the hypothesis that infection is a cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor. Periodontal infections are a leading culprit, with studies reporting associations between periodontal disease and CVD. The results, however, have varied, and it often is unclear what conclusions can be drawn from these data. Summary. An association...

How periodontal disease may contribute to cardiovascular disease.

Coronary artery disease is the major cause of premature death among men in industrialized countries, and its pathological basis is atherosclerosis. Hemostatic and rheological variables are associated with both prevalent and incident cardiovascular disease and may be mechanisms through which risk factors such as smoking, hyperlipidemia and infections (including periodontal disease) may promote v...

Periodontal Disease and Carotid Atherosclerosis: Mechanisms of the Association

Despite advances in its diagnosis and management, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in western countries. Many risk factors are involved in the development of cardiovascular disease; recently, periodontal disease was recognized as a new risk factor in many epidemiological studies. The association between dental and cardiovascular disease is intriguing for the potential c...
